Natural diversity and rich flora and fauna

Keukenhof estate features remarkable landscape diversity thanks to peat soil in the west and sandy soil in the east. The Keukenhof forest contains the last remaining dunes in the Netherlands. Together with the province of South Holland, the biodiversity of meadows and forests is carefully managed. The estate is rich in flowers and plants, and visitors can also spot various animals such as deer, kingfishers, hares, and storks. The meadows are grazed by cows from an organic farm.

History of Keukenhof estate

Keukenhof estate dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was known as “Keukenduyn,” a hunting ground supplying game to Teylingen castle. In 1641, Adriaan Maartenzoon Block, former commander of the Dutch East India Company, built a country house on the site. Over the following centuries, the estate expanded further.

In the early 19th century, Jonkheer Johan Steengracht van Oostcapellen purchased the estate and saved the manor from decay. Under his guidance, the estate grew further, and the current castle took shape when his daughter, Jonkvrouw Cecilia, and her husband, Baron Carel van Pallandt, added six towers to the manor. Renowned garden architects J.D. Zocher and L.P. Zocher redesigned the gardens, giving the castle its present charm.
